We've put this list together to help schools to do their bit for the environment.
Organise a patch of land for students to plant and grow.
Arrange school trips that help students to understand the importance of caring for the environment, such as a ‘beach clean’ trip, or visiting a recycling centre.
Where possible, ensure any paper ordered is 100% recycled. Choose eco-friendly suppliers, such as a green IT provider for your school (did we mention Trailblaze are the green IT provider for schools? Read more...)
Choose a green energy provider, and you can go one step further and apply for a grant to get solar panels installed at the school.
Keep the blinds up in classrooms to make use of the natural light. By allowing the natural light into the classroom, you won’t need to turn the lights on, and can reduce your electricity usage.
Promote walking, cycling, or scooting to school to reduce carbon emissions. Any school transport provided should be electric powered where possible.
Have a couple of water butts on your school grounds to collect rainwater, and these can be used for the children to water the plants (fresh water is even better for plants!)
Keep a secure compost bin on the school grounds to store any food or garden waste. The compost can then be used for planting too!
Encourage children to bring in unwanted packaging for science or art projects at the school.
By having all your lights fitted with LED bulbs you can save energy, reducing your bills and saving the environment.
Register with ‘Eco-Schools’ to become an official eco school. They provide a seven-step framework for schools to follow to become eco-friendly, and schools can then apply for a Green Flag accreditation. Visit website.
Organise school fêtes, and offer parents a stall to sell unwanted toys. This will reduce the amount of plastic going to landfill, and could also be a way to raise money for the school.
Get free trees for your school through Woodland Trust, who are helping to combat climate change, build a greener future for the UK and create havens for wildlife. Visit website
Parents can donate old school uniform to the school and it can be sold at a cheap price to raise money for the school or for other good causes.
Keep a patch of land set aside and let it grow wild! Plant some trees on the land to create a natural environment to encourage wildlife. The students could observe the miniature beasts and bugs that live here and learn more about insects and birds.
